Course Syllabus

In this area of the course, your instructor will post the course syllabus as an attachment or in text. If the file is loaded as an attachment, you can download it or use the preview icon to view it within this window. Canvas also displays all course activities here (assignments that have links and course events that show in plain text) along with their associated dates.  You can look to the right of the screen to see the course calendar as well.  It is possible your instructor may choose not to use the Syllabus area of the course.  You might have to look to other areas of the course, such as the home page or modules, to view the course syllabus.

The course syllabus will typically include the following information:

  • Basic course information (course by number, section, title, semester, meeting times, days, place, format)
  • Instructor information (name, title, rank, office location, office phone number, e-mail)
  • Description of the course content
  • Course goals and objectives (linked to professional standards if appropriate)
  • Required purchases for the course. You may also want to note where else texts will be available (e.g., the library, online, electronic reserves)
  • Pre- and co-requisites for the course (not just courses; what skills are expected also)
